Chronic Wound Care
Chronic wounds can cause a variety of health issues and affect the quality of life for those that who suffer with them.
At the UM UCH Center for Wound Care, we offer innovative wound care therapies tailored to your specific needs. Our team of specialist is drawn from a wide range of medical fields. We work together with your primary care physician to address any other medical conditions that may be slowing the wound healing process.
Types of Wounds
At the Center for Wound Care, our goal is to help our patients heal with a focus on preventing new non-healing wounds. Our wound care team conducts an in-depth assessment to find the underlying reason the wound is not healing and develops a treatment plan designed specifically for each patient. We treat a variety of ulcers and open wounds, including:
- Pressure ulcers
- Burns
- Ulcers and slow healing wounds due to complications from diabetes
- Wounds caused by vasculitis, peripheral artery disease or other vascular disorders
- Surgical wounds
- Open bone infections
- Radiation-related tissue damage with open wounds
- Neuropathic ulcers
Complications from non-healing wounds can create additional issues. You will have access to the expertise of physicians throughout University of Maryland, including those specializing in diabetes and endocrine.
Chronic Wound Treatments
Chronic wounds that won't heal after several weeks or months may be the result of poor blood, poor venous circulation or being immunocompromised. If not treated properly, they could lead to infection or even amputation. At UM UCH Center for Wound Care, we focus on the nature of chronic wounds and the most effective way to treat them.
Our advanced clinical treatments and services include:
- Bio-engineered skin grafting
- Compression therapy
- Contact casting
- Removal of unhealthy tissue
- Negative pressure wound therapy
- Patient education and support
This coming fall, we will offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in the blood, allowing oxygen to pass more easily to the wounds to heal them.
Ostomy Care
Our certified wound ostomy continence nurses will work with you before surgery and afterwards with you and your physician to provide treatment recommendations to help patients return to their normal activities. They will help you with the selection of products you may need post-surgery, provide information about nutrition and lifestyle changes you may need to make, as well as treatment recommendations for post-surgery issues.
Insurance Coverage
Services are covered by Medicare/Medicaid, most HMOs and other private insurance plans when wound treatment is medically necessary.
